The Keepers Episode 5: The Suspects Recap

Episode 5, aptly named The Suspects opens with Lillian Hughes Knipp retelling the time she mustered the courage to confront Father Maskell. In 2002, she went to the hospital where he was being treated for dementia. She approached his bed and asked if he remembered her. But she could tell he was gone – blank nothing there. “He died premature and well deserved”, she states.

The episode quickly moves to spotlight the two main suspects, the first being Edgar Davidson.  Debbie Yohn, Edgar’s niece had contacted Gemma and told her that her Uncle Ed “killed Cathy Cesnik”. Debbie’s aunt, who agrees to an interview under anonymity is identified only as “Margaret”, tells her story.  She married Edgar at 16, even after being warned by his sister that there were “things about Ed you don’t know.” Margaret eventually began to see the violent side of Edgar. He lied to her about work and did not pay the household bills. She tried to leave him, but Edgar threatened to kill her. They remained together and Margaret birthed twins a year later. On the night of Nov. 7th, the hospital called to tell her she could bring home her premature baby girl, who had just hit the 5lb mark. Edgar unexpectedly came home from work early and was covered in blood. He told Margaret that he had been in a fight with his boss. She also recalls watching the news about Cathy’s disappearance with Edgar and says that he smirked and laughed and revealed that he may know more about the missing nun. In September of 1970, Edgar was arrested for trying to lure teenage girls from Rockland Highschool, which was right next to Cathy’s apartment. The last piece of this puzzle was a Christmas gift from Edgar, a year after Cathy’s disappearance. He gifted Margaret a necklace with a wedding bell pendant and green stone. She thought this was very peculiar an unlike Edgar to give her jewelry, especially a wedding bell as they were already married and the stone was not her birthstone. We are told that Cathy’s engagement present to her sister was never found in her car.

The second suspect, Billy Schmidt, was brought to our attention by his niece, Sharon Schmidt. She also contacted Gemma and said that she believed her uncle had been involved in Cathy’s murder. She remembers a fight her mother and father had when she was young. Her father, never a drinker, had started drinking one day and this caused a fight between her parents. She recalls her father yelling at her mother and saying, “You know why I drink? Because we killed someone and put her behind the shed.”

Next we meet with Sharon’s mom, who tells us about the night her husband, Ronald came home covered in blood. He said that he had been in a bar fight. The drinking started soon after this episode. Billy also became a “hermit” after Cathy’s disappearance and became strangely obsessed with the nun’s case. He would talk about a woman in the attic… which Barbara tells us she saw one day. It was a mannequin dressed in a nun’s habit in his parents attic. Billy committed suicide 5 months later.

The most chilling part of the episode is when we are played a recorded tape interview with Brian Schmidt, Sharon’s brother. He recounts being with Billy in Cathy’s apartment. Billy then sent Brian back to his apartment and called his friend, Skippy. The two men went into Cathy’s apartment for a long period of time. They emerged , took Brian to a car and then carried a large rolled up blanket and placed it in the trunk. They drove into the woods and disposed of it. Uncle Billy told Brian that if he ever told anyone this, he would kill him.

The episode ends with Gemma finally speaking to Cathy’s sister, Marilyn, who had previously not wanted to communicate with her. They agree to meet and Gemma is visibly upset after the call.

This episode leaves us with a ton of questions about the two suspects. Did Maskell hire one of these men to do his dirty work? Were both Billy and Edgar involved? Was the necklace gifted to Margaret Cathy’s present to her engaged sister? Keep watching to find out!

  1. Super confused, how is it that Billy and Skippy were in Cesnik’s apartment (He recounts being with Billy in Cathy’s apartment. Billy then sent Brian back to his apartment and called his friend, Skippy. The two men went into Cathy’s apartment for a long period of time. They emerged , took Brian to a car and then carried a large rolled up blanket and placed it in the trunk.) the night of the murder, but the Roommate never mentioned this, saw this????? In the first episode Cesnik’s roommate and fellow teacher, Sister Helen Russell Philips, began to worry when the nun never returned from shopping and phoned Gerry Koob, also a fellow teacher and friend of Cesnik’s, and another priest at midnight. Was the roommate not home, thought she was… This is a huge discrepancy. Can someone please clarify.
